History

Sunbelt Transformer was founded in Temple, Texas, in late 1981. The company started at a green field site with 4 employees. Randall Maddox, Dave Sorge, Gary Lockhart, Robert Collins and Paul Maddox were the original founders. All but Paul Maddox work at the company, which racked up $493,000.00 in revenue the first year.

Robert Collins left in the early years as the company grew fast at the original location. After a shaky start due to a depression in the Texas economy caused by oil patch woes, the company began to buy and sell equipment throughout the region.

In 1984, Sunbelt formed what today would be called a strategic partnership with the NOW defunct Electric Equipment Co. (EE). Sunbelt did shop work for EE and joint ventured equipment with them. This partnership was the prime mover in Sunbelt becoming a national player in remanufactured transformers. In 1986, following 5 years of hyper growth, Sunbelt was named to Inc. Magazines 500 Fastest Growing Company List and honored at the annual conference in Cleveland, Ohio. The partnership with EE dissolved in early 1991 and growth for Sunbelt stalled.

About this time, Gary Lockhart left the company. He had played a brilliant role as the marketing VP and left a legacy of customers with a great perception of Sunbelt. As the Gulf War ensued, recession dealt Sunbelt a decrease in sales that is the only one experienced in 19 years, and further problems were brewing.

Owners' goals were diverging and the company's management was clearly suffering from the Peter Principle.  Randall Maddox once said, "We have met the enemy and it is us!" After several years of attempting to reconcile goals of ownership, Maddox orchestrated a management-led leverage buyout. Dave Sorge retired after years of contribution and Paul Maddox, already in his 70's opted for liquidity.

With a new professional leadership, the company was poised to move ahead. The late nineties would see the following substantial change from the past era:

In 1999, Kyle McQueen became CEO. Maddox, after 18 years at the helm, recognized the talent and leadership that McQueen had brought to the company since his employment in 1991. The organization further recognized that McQueen  could set the pace for tremendous growth and prosperity in the new millennium.

In April of 2001 a major fire struck Sunbelt's power transformer works in Temple Tx. All associates worked hard and restored full production by October. Many customers were affected and The Company has deep gratitude for it's customers and their patience. Sunbelt has become a much stronger company.

Today, Sunbelt strives to be the customer's 1st CHOICE FOR ALL TRANSFORMER NEEDS. The owners and associates are dedicated to customers and their needs. The Organization embraces the changes that will propel it's success in the ever changing world of the 21st Century.
